Initial Jobless Claims Rise at Year’s End


Washington, DC, Jan. 3, 2013 — Initial claims for unemployment benefits rose to a five-week high, according to the Labor Department.

Initial jobless claims increased 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 372,000 in the week ended Dec. 29.

Employment patterns during the holiday season can distort the claims report. Also, government offices close for several days.
